Well run, the food was excellent and the guides know exactly what they are doing. If all you want is a sunrise photograph on the rim you can get that anywhere. The transport from Bali was organised down to the ferry queue and the supermarket stops. Dinner was a table covered in dishes, all of it good and more than we could eat. There were six of us and a pair of guides watching everyone's footing the whole way. We were able to go down into the crater, which is the part I will not forget.

Well organised, with good communication before we left. It is a big journey, so be ready for a lot of time in the van, but it is worth it if you have a short window. Bromo was the highlight and we walked it the opposite way to most groups, so we had it to ourselves for a while.

Do not expect luxury — hot water is not guaranteed everywhere you sleep, and there is a lot of driving and some hard walking. You do see Bromo and Ijen, and both are spectacular. Doing Bromo against the crowd was a good call.

Riko drove and Ekshal guided, and he was good with our family — assertive without pushing when hundreds of people were all trying to get down to the flames at once. Be aware it is about 10 km of walking in total: 3.5 km up to the rim, a kilometre down a narrow rocky track and back, and 3.5 km down again.

Picked up at 00:15 and driven to the start, which opens at 02:00. Jee took good care of us. The walk up took about ninety minutes at a decent pace, and the climb down into the crater is another thirty.

Pebri was kind and knew the mountain. We were meant to be collected at 02:30 for the flames, but the crater was shut that night because the gas was too heavy where they burn, and the entry time moved back. We still got the sunrise and the lake, and the guiding was excellent.

Be clear about what is on offer before you book: there is very little chance of seeing the blue fire now, because visitors are kept above the crater rather than going down to the edge. Unless the wind is strong you will not see it, and that makes for a hard walk with a different reward at the end of it.

We did not see the blue fire and it was still worth every step. The sunrise from the rim was out of this world. Qim Qim was friendly, funny and taught us a great deal about the mountain, and the climb to the top was short — about an hour.

We started up Mount Ijen in the morning with a private guide instead of joining the night crowd, and if you are fit that is much the better way to do it. We had the crater to ourselves and Sule told us far more than we would have heard in a queue.

The waterfall is magic and the volcano is impressive. You need some condition for this one: five kilometres uphill, two more down into the crater for the blue fire, then back up for the sunrise. Bondan knows a lot about the volcanoes and the plants.
