Visiting Ijen Volcano
A visit here happens at one in the morning. The gate opens for night walkers, you climb three kilometres in the dark, and the whole thing is arranged around being on the rim before the sky goes light. Everything else — what you pay, what you carry, which departure suits you — follows from that single fact.
What a visit to Kawah Ijen actually involves
Four to six hours on the mountain, most of it in the dark and most of it uphill. From Paltuding the trail climbs about 500 metres over three kilometres of wide track to the crater rim at roughly 2,386 metres. Ninety minutes is the honest average; walkers who move fast report an hour, and nobody is timing you.

Why everything starts at 1am
The flames are only visible against darkness. They burn all day and all night, and from about half an hour before first light they simply stop showing. That is the whole reason a climb that takes ninety minutes begins at one in the morning rather than at seven.
Departures leave Banyuwangi between 11pm and half past midnight. Trips that start in Bali leave the previous afternoon, cross on the evening ferry and sleep an hour from the gate. Either way you are walking by two.

The walk: three kilometres, 500 metres, in the dark
The track up is wide, graded and busy. It is a steady climb rather than a scramble, and the surface is compacted volcanic grit that holds well when dry. Most people manage it with ordinary fitness and a head torch, and the ones who struggle are usually the ones who set off too fast in the cold.
The descent into the crater is a different proposition: about a kilometre of narrow, steep, loose rock with two-way traffic on it. One traveller measured the whole night at around ten kilometres including that detour. Whether your group goes down at all depends on your operator and on what the park allows that night, which the safety page sets out in full.
What the fare covers, and what is still to pay
The park charges a per-person entry fee at Paltuding. It is higher at weekends and on public holidays than midweek, and higher for foreign visitors than for Indonesian ones, and the current rate is posted at the window. Almost every departure listed here already covers it; on the handful that do not, you pay at the gate.
Two other costs sit outside most fares. A health declaration is required before you can start walking, and while several fares include the fee, on the rest your guide arranges it on the drive up. The trolley taxi — a cart pushed and pulled by miners for anyone who cannot walk it — is in nobody's fare and runs at fifty to eighty dollars.

What to wear and carry

The one Friday a month the mountain shuts
Kawah Ijen closes for one day in the first week of every month, and operators building their schedules around it say so plainly on their own listings. On top of that the park closes the crater whenever the gas readings or the weather call for it, sometimes for a single night and occasionally for much longer.
None of that need cost you anything. Almost every departure listed here refunds in full at 24 hours, which is the cheapest insurance available against a mountain that decides its own opening hours. Confirm your date with the operator the week before, and keep a spare morning in the plan if you can.
The questions people ask before they book
Do I need to book Ijen Volcano tours in advance?
Yes, a few days ahead. Almost every departure here runs once a night and fills from a single town, and the cheapest seats go first in the dry months. Two or three days is comfortable outside July and August, and a week is safer inside them.
Are Ijen tours refundable?
Most are, up to 24 hours before the start, for a full refund. Two are not: one takes six days' notice instead, and one is sold final with no refund and no change. Check the line on the card before you pay, because on this mountain a weather cancellation is a real possibility.
Is a private Ijen tour worth the extra?
It is if you want to set the hour you leave, and on this mountain that decides whether you see the flames. Most listings here are private, which means the vehicle leaves when your party is ready rather than when the last seat fills. If you are happy walking with a group and starting when the group starts, the shared departures cost a third as much.
How much do Ijen Volcano tours cost?
