Ijen Volcano Private Tours

Twelve of the climbs on this mountain run privately, and on a trail where several hundred people pass one barrier within twenty minutes, what you are buying is the hour you leave rather than the comfort of the seat.

What a private Ijen Volcano tour actually is

A vehicle, a driver and a guide, and nobody in them but your own party. Twelve of the trips here say so in those words: this is a private tour, only your group will participate. Nobody else is collected, nobody else sets the departure hour, and nobody else decides when you come down.

The mountain at the other end is the same mountain. What you are buying is the night around it, and on a trail that queues at a single barrier that turns out to be worth more here than it would almost anywhere else.

Why choose a private tour

The hour you leave is yours

Several hundred people pass the Paltuding barrier within about twenty minutes of each other. Being in the first part of that wave rather than the middle is decided in town, two hours earlier, by what time your vehicle leaves.

Collection is from your own address

Your hotel, your guesthouse or the ferry terminal, rather than a fixed forecourt at a fixed hour. On one of these you can be collected from anywhere in Bali rather than only near the airport.

The pace on the trail is yours

Fast if you want to get ahead of the crowd, slow if somebody in your party needs it. Travellers on the private climbs describe both, sometimes in the same review.

Nobody is waiting for you to come down

Your driver waits for your group and no one else, so you can stay on the rim while the light changes instead of being counted back into a van.

The guiding is one to one

On a shared departure a guide is looking after up to fifty people. On a private one they are looking after yours, which matters most on the narrow section below the rim.

Private from sixty-five dollarsYour own vehicle, your own hour, and the gate fee already inside the fare.

Private tours vs the shared departures

Six of the climbs here publish a group cap instead: ten, twenty, fifty or ninety-nine travellers. They are cheaper, and on this mountain they are genuinely good — the twenty-six dollar shared climb rates 4.9. The difference is not the guiding. It is the clock.

Both versions climb the same three kilometres at the same hour. The private fare buys the timing rather than the mountain.

What you get, and what you don't

Every private trip here carries the vehicle, the driver, a guide, a gas mask and a headlamp. Most carry the park's entrance fee, and several carry the health declaration as well. What none of them carries is the trolley taxi, which is negotiated at the gate in cash at fifty to eighty dollars.

Meals depend on the shape of the trip. The night climbs carry water, coffee and a snack; the overnight versions add a dinner and a breakfast; the multi-day packages feed you properly. The money guide itemises the lot.

Planning a private tour

Book two or three days ahead outside July and August, and a week inside them. Agree the departure hour when you book rather than on the night: eleven at night from Banyuwangi puts you near the front of the trail, and one in the morning does not.

Confirm the collection point in writing the evening before. The single recurring complaint across every product on this mountain is a pickup that was never confirmed, and it takes five minutes to rule out. Fares run from sixty-five dollars for a night climb from town to a hundred and ninety-nine for an overnight trip out of Bali with north Bali attached.

Useful tip. Ask the operator what the crater floor has been doing that week when you book. Private operators know, and the good ones will tell you straight. Why the flames are never promised explains what they are reading.

Who should choose something else

If you are travelling alone and watching the budget, a private vehicle is a lot of car for one person, and the shared climb from Banyuwangi at twenty-six dollars carries the same gate fee, the same mask and a 4.9 rating. If your holiday is based in Bali and you want a bed rather than a night in a vehicle, the twenty-four-hour trip with a room in Java is better value than any private day trip across the strait.

And if you want Mount Bromo as well, this is the wrong page: the multi-day packages are private on the ground anyway, and the Bromo and Ijen page compares them. A Ijen crater tour of any kind gets you the same crater; the format is about the day.

Frequently asked questions

What makes an Ijen tour private?

Only your group travels. In practice that means your own vehicle, your own driver and a guide walking with your party rather than with a coachload. Twelve of the climbs here are sold that way, and they say so in those words.

How much more does a private tour cost?

From sixty-five dollars for a night climb out of Banyuwangi against twenty-six for the shared version, and from a hundred and twenty for a private day trip from Bali. Because the fare buys a vehicle, the gap narrows sharply once there are two or more of you.

Does private mean I choose the departure time?

Yes, and it is the main thing you are buying. The hour your vehicle leaves town decides where you are in the queue at the barrier, which decides whether you reach the vents before the crowd does.

Is a private guide better on the mountain?

Not better trained, but far less stretched. On the narrow track below the rim a guide looking after two people can do things a guide looking after fifty cannot, which is why the private climbs are the ones travellers name their guide in.

Can a private tour collect me from the ferry?

Several can, and one lists the Ketapang terminal as a collection point alongside Banyuwangi hotels. If you are crossing from Bali under your own steam that is the cheapest way to combine the two.

Are private tours refundable?

Most are, in full, up to 24 hours before departure. The three-day private package from Malang is the exception and asks for six days' notice. Check the line on the card before you pay.

Do private tours go down to the crater floor?

Some do and some do not, and it is not a private-versus-shared distinction. Operators differ, and the park restricts access to the working face. Ask before booking if the descent is the point of the trip for you.

Every departure to this crater, whatever shape it takes, is priced and compared side by side on Ijen Volcano Tours.
