Visiting Ijen Volcano Without a Tour

Nobody selling tours has an incentive to answer this honestly, so here it is. There is no rule requiring a guide on this mountain, the trail is wide and busy, and the gate sells tickets to anyone who turns up. Whether you should is a different question and the answer changes with where you are staying.

Can you climb Kawah Ijen without a guide?

Yes. The park sells its own entry at Paltuding, masks are hired at the gate, and the trail to the rim is a wide graded track with several hundred people on it. Plenty of independent travellers do it every night in the dry season.

The two things that are not optional are the health declaration, which is collected before you can start walking, and a mask, which you will want within ten minutes of the first plume. Both are arranged on the spot; neither is complicated.

What does doing it yourself involve?

• Getting to Banyuwangi. Ferry from Bali, train from Surabaya, or a domestic flight into the local airport.
• A bed in town. You will be leaving it at about half past eleven at night.
• Transport to Paltuding. A hired scooter, a car with a driver, or a taxi arranged the evening before.
• The health declaration. Sorted on the way up or at the gate.
• The gate fee. Paid at the window, in cash, at whatever the posted rate is that day.
• A mask and a torch. Hired at the gate or brought with you.

Is the road the problem?

It is the main one. An hour of switchbacks in the dark, on a road you have never driven, having not slept. Then the same road back at eight in the morning, having walked ten kilometres. Plenty of people who ride confidently in Bali decide this particular hour is not the one to learn on.

What does it cost, honestly?

The arithmetic only clearly favours going alone if you are already in town and riding your own scooter.

What do you actually lose by going alone?

Three things, and the first is the biggest. You lose the person who knows when to put the mask on. The plume moves with the wind, and nobody standing on that path for the first time can read it. You lose the descent to the vents, where local knowledge stops being a nicety. And you lose the driver who is awake at eight in the morning.

You also lose the information. The guides on this mountain are named by first name in review after review — Qim Qim, Sule, Malik, Ekshal, Jee — and what they are being thanked for is usually not the walking.

Should you go down to the crater floor alone?

No. That is the one straightforwardly unwise part of the independent version. It is a narrow, steep track of loose rock, in the dark, in gas that moves without warning, with loaded miners coming through in both directions, and the park restricts access to the working face for good reason.

When does going independent clearly win?

When you are already staying in Banyuwangi, you ride confidently, you are travelling alone so a tour fare is not split with anyone, and you want to leave at your own hour. That is a real set of circumstances and a decent number of travellers are in it.

It also wins if you want to climb in daylight rather than at night. Nothing about the independent version forces a midnight start, and one traveller describes walking up in the morning with a guide and having the crater to themselves.

When does a tour clearly win?

When you are starting from Bali, when there are two or more of you, when you would rather not drive a mountain road at midnight, or when your date might need moving. That last one is worth its own sentence: almost every fare here refunds in full at 24 hours, and an independent trip refunds nothing at all.

It also wins on the multi-day version. Getting yourself from Malang to Tumpak Sewu to Bromo to the crater without a vehicle is a logistical project rather than a holiday.

Where do you stay if you are doing it yourself?

Banyuwangi town, almost certainly. It is an hour from the gate, it has the widest choice of rooms at every budget, and it is where the ferry from Bali lands. Licin and the villages higher up the road are closer but far thinner on accommodation, and staying up there saves perhaps twenty minutes at the cost of everything else.

What should you carry if you go alone?

• Cash, in small notes. The gate, the mask hire, the warungs and the health declaration are all cash.
• Your own head torch. Hire exists but a headlamp you trust is worth the weight.
• A warm layer and gloves. Cold on the rim, warm at the gate.
• Water, filled before you start. Nothing is sold above the trailhead.
• A photo ID. Wanted at the medical checkpoint.
• A charged phone, and no expectation of signal.

A middle path that works

Cross to Java independently, stay a night in Banyuwangi, and book a guided climb from town for the night itself. You keep control of the expensive part of the trip — the crossing and the accommodation — and you hand over the one hour that is genuinely better handled by somebody who does it nightly.
